This course examines the causes, consequences, and proposed solutions to contemporary social problems. A special emphasis will be put on the following: poverty, race and ethnicity, gender inequality, education, work and the economy, family, alcohol and drug abuse, crime, health and medicine.
Upon successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
- CO1: Describe the three major sociological perspectives: structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism.
- CO2: Explain the importance of doing a sociological analysis of society's problems.
- CO3: Use sociological theories and research methods to analyze contemporary social problems.
- CO4: Use the sociological imagination to identify key social factors that contribute to both personal problems.
- CO5: Express sensitivity to other people’s views or values, including their culture, religion, heritage, and history.
- CO6: Compare and contrast the sociological theories used to explain deviance, conformity, and social control.
- CO7: Examine the connection between crime and social factors such as age, race, gender, and class.
- CO8: Make use of sociological concepts and theories in everyday conversation.
- CO9: Describe contemporary social issues associated with race, ethnicity, gender, and social status.
- CO10: Discuss the importance of social institutions as well as their contribution to society's problems.
- CO11: Identify key assumptions in the interpretation of social problems and evaluate the impact of these assumptions on problem-solving strategies.
