However, have you ever met an archaeologist in person? What is archaeology and what do archaeologists do? First, archaeology is much more than digging! Archaeology is just one of the sub-disciplines of the larger field of anthropology.

Primatologists study both living and extinct primates in their natural habitats and in laboratories by conducting field studies and experiments in order to understand aspects of their evolution and behavior.

(We slowly backed away and got in our car.) My research interests changed in that moment: I wanted to study primate antipredator behavior, the strategies primates use to escape from predators.

Biological anthropology uses a scientific and evolutionary approach to answer many of the same questions all anthropologists are concerned with.

The best explanation for why animals form groups and endure the costs of feeding competition is to minimize the risk of predation. Grouping patterns are tied to diet and the defensibility of resources. Females are out to maximize resources for themselves and their offspring, so as to maximize their reproductive success. If a species eats grass or leaves, it does not make sense to defend those resources.

As our closest living relatives, their behavior is strikingly similar to our own. Primatology studies primate behavior. Biological anthropologists studying primates are interested in their social complexity and ecological and behavioral variation.
