Making Flyers and knowing how to distribute them is an important part of most campaigns.
A good flyer:
- Has the basics of who, what, when, where, and why
- Has some way to contact the organizers
- Has something to get the viewer interested in what you want them to do
- has visuals that align with the intent of the campaign
- Is visually appealing
- Is accessible by having colors that work for people with different visual needs and has alt-text that includes text and description.
Example: VIDA Open House Flyer
When student fellows in the Vasconcellos Institute for Democracy in Action (VIDA) come up with an idea for an event, one of the first tasks they prioritize is to create a flyer. This ensures they begin promoting their event with enough time to do effective outreach. For any event, you want to think about who you are inviting. In the following examples, VIDA Fellows are inviting their peers to events on campus that center volunteering and voting.

Developing Your Skills
In organizing, the best way to develop your skills is to practice what you are learning in this class. After you have done this activity, you will be more ready to volunteer for this task with your favorite organization and movement.
- Create a flyer for something you are working on. It can be a hypothetical event.
- Create a professional email message that explains what the event is and shares the details of the event, so those using screen readers can access the information without being able to see the flyer.
- Send the email message with the flyer both embedded and attached to your instructor.
