    When you are organizing, you often need to talk about people. This can involve issues such as dealing with problems someone is causing in the organization, a desire to help someone grow, or managing conflict between people. There is a fine line between negative gossip and a strategic conversation about a person. It is negative gossip when you are talking about people in ways that undermine relationships and don't serve a positive purpose. Many people hesitate to engage in strategic conversations when they are needed because they worry that talking about people is always negative. This activity asks you to reflect on the difference between strategic conversations and negative gossip, so that you can give yourself permission to have the conversations needed to improve the relationships within your organization.

    Think about the following questions and answer them for yourself.

    • Share a time when you have seen negative gossip hurt a community?
    • Share an example of a useful strategic conversation about someone you have seen or participated in.
    • Think of a strategic conversation you could have with someone about something you are working on. What might you say? How might it turn into negative gossip? How might it be productive? What could you do to keep it productive and frm turning into negative gossip?
