    Public speaking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop, regardless of their academic major, career path, or personal goals. Whether speaking in a classroom, workplace, community setting, or online environment, effective communication empowers individuals to share ideas, build relationships, advocate for change, and contribute meaningfully to society.

    This Open Educational Resource (OER) was created to provide students with an accessible, practical, and engaging introduction to public speaking. Designed for introductory college-level communication courses, the text combines foundational communication theory with real-world applications to help students become confident, ethical, and audience-centered speakers.

    The book guides students through the entire speech-making process, beginning with an introduction to communication and public speaking, managing communication apprehension, analyzing audiences, and developing effective listening skills. Students will learn how to select and refine speech topics, conduct research, evaluate evidence, organize ideas, and create compelling introductions and conclusions. Additional chapters focus on speech delivery, visual aids, informative speaking, persuasive speaking, special occasion speaking, mediated communication, and the ethical responsibilities of public speakers.

    Recognizing the evolving communication landscape, this text also addresses contemporary topics such as artificial intelligence in research, online and remote presentations, information literacy, and ethical decision-making. Throughout the book, students are encouraged to think critically about their roles as both speakers and listeners in diverse and interconnected communities.

    Each chapter includes key terminology, discussion questions, references, and supplementary materials designed to reinforce learning and promote classroom engagement. The organization of the text allows instructors flexibility in course design while providing students with a clear and structured path toward communication competence.

    Ultimately, this book is built on the belief that effective communication is a learned skill, not an innate talent. With practice, preparation, and reflection, every student can develop the ability to communicate with clarity, confidence, credibility, and purpose.
