Choose one cultural object or practice that has traveled internationally. Possible examples include a musical genre, garment, beauty practice, sport, television format, food, dance, slang term, religious practice, meme, or design tradition. Construct its Cultural Passport by tracing where it emerged, how it crossed borders, which diffusion processes helped it travel, how at least two communities changed it, who helped amplify it, who profits from it today, debates over authenticity or ownership, and whether globalization strengthened, weakened, or transformed its connection to its place of origin.
Your submission may take the form of a 1,200–1,500 word analysis, interactive timeline, illustrated story map, podcast, or short documentary. The strongest projects will show that a cultural form does not simply travel. It accumulates histories as it moves.
Assignment 2: The Global Plate Autopsy
Choose one dish that matters to you personally, culturally, regionally—or simply because you enjoy eating it. Perform a Global Plate Autopsy by investigating where its major ingredients originated, the historical processes that brought those ingredients together, migration, colonialism, trade, or labor systems connected to the dish, how recipes changed across generations or borders, competing claims about authenticity, who produces key ingredients today, how the dish is marketed and valued, and whether different cooks receive different levels of prestige for preparing versions of it.
Then answer: What does your dish reveal about globalization that the recipe alone cannot tell us? Use at least four scholarly or authoritative sources.
Assignment 3: The Cultural Power Investigation
Choose one cultural phenomenon that became internationally visible within roughly the last decade. Do not write a conventional report explaining why it became popular. Investigate its power structure by asking who created it, who amplified it, who changed it, who profited from it, and who received credit. Then Follow the Infrastructure: Which corporations, platforms, states, migration networks, entertainment industries, technologies, or institutions helped move it?
Finally evaluate: Does this case demonstrate cultural democratization, cultural inequality, or both? Connect your analysis to at least three other dimensions of Global Studies, such as economics, politics, technology, migration, history, inequality, or environment.
