What Happens When the Whole Book Walks Onto a Stage?

Imagine that it is just before midnight in Seoul.

A countdown reaches zero, a music video appears online, and within seconds someone in Manila has shared it while fans in Los Angeles are already watching with subtitles. A reaction video is being recorded in Mexico City. Someone in São Paulo is arguing about the choreography. A teenager in Jakarta recognizes a fashion reference. Fans in Paris begin translating an interview. A dance challenge appears on TikTok. Streams begin accumulating across platforms headquartered thousands of miles from South Korea, merchandise orders start moving through international payment systems and supply chains, entertainment reporters begin tracking chart positions, and tourism boards, brands, governments, and investors all start paying attention.

Somewhere, somebody's parent walks past a bedroom door, hears screaming, and wonders what on earth has happened.

    Welcome to globalization.

Not the diagram version. Not globalization as a neat definition involving trade, migration, institutions, and arrows crossing a map. This is globalization as people actually experience it: noisy, emotional, commercial, political, digital, creative, unequal, and almost impossible to separate into clean categories.

K-pop is useful to global studies precisely because it refuses to stay in one intellectual box. Explain it as music and economics immediately interrupts. Explain it as an industry and questions of culture push their way back in. Treat it as culture and politics appears. Talk about politics and technology changes the rules. Focus on technology and suddenly labor, identity, race, gender, inequality, language, ownership, and power are already waiting.

K-pop is not simply the story of South Korean music becoming internationally popular. It is a story about how culture is produced inside global systems, how those systems are shaped by unequal histories, how corporations and governments attempt to organize cultural flows, how audiences transform what they receive, and how something can become deeply global while remaining strongly associated with a particular place.

That makes it an unusually useful case with which to end our journey through globalization.

By now, the central argument of this book should sound familiar. Globalization is not one thing moving in one direction. It is an unstable collection of relationships connecting people, states, markets, institutions, technologies, environments, and ideas. K-pop allows us to watch many of those relationships operate at the same time.

So rather than adding another set of concepts, we are going to do something different.

We are going to follow the music.
