    The following resources were developed to help you prepare for your intercultural communication course. These supplemental materials were designed to help you facilitate dialogue and engagement with the textbook material in your classroom whether you are teaching face-to-face or online. Please remember this is an instructor’s manual and intended for faculty members who are using this book. Please do not post this manual anywhere it can be accessed publicly. This manual provides instructors with chapter outlines, additional chapter resources, including, activities, discussions, supplemental materials, PowerPoint slides, and a test bank.

    Outlines

    For each textbook chapter we have provided an outline that provides an overview of the chapter to help instructors focus on key points in their instruction.

    Chapter Resources

    Activities

    Active learning provides students with the opportunity to engage with course content in deeper and more meaningful ways. For each chapter, we have provided several activities illustrating key concepts and ideas.

    Activities are designed for classes of roughly 30 students but they can be modified and adapted to meet the needs of classes of all sizes. We tried to be considerate of the changing modalities that we find ourselves teaching in so our classroom activities can be adapted for synchronous and asynchronous online courses. Activities can be modified for online breakout sessions (depending upon the platform being utilized) or set up to be completed entirely in the learning management system (canvas, blackboard, etc.).

    The activities are structured to provide an introduction and content connection, then an explanation of the student activity is provided followed by further investigation. Leaving time for students to share their experiences with the activities helps improve student engagement and learning. Most activities can be completed individually, in pairs, small groups, and sometimes in a large class setting. Finally, some activities may require advance preparation, these are noted where needed to help you prepare.

    Discussion

    Each chapter has discussion questions that can be adapted to large class discussions; smaller, breakout discussions; and online discussion forums. The goal of the discussion questions is to help students connect the course content to their daily lives and the larger cultural events of our time.

    Supplemental Materials

    Each chapter includes links to a variety of multimedia resources. These resources include websites, videos from a number of sources including TED Talks, news articles, podcasts, online modules, movies, and other popular culture clips. These resources are provided with a web link, identifying information, and a brief explanation. The goal of these resources is to provide additional materials that you might use to illustrate and expand upon the chapter content.

    PowerPoint Slides

    We have provided a set of PowerPoint slides for each chapter. These slides are meant to supplement the textbook chapters and follow the chapter outlines.

    The slides follow the same section headings used in the textbook chapter allowing students to connect the slide content back to the section of the textbook being shared. Slides include relevant section headings corresponding with the textbook. Our attempt was to provide the key findings from each chapter while allowing faculty to expand upon specific topics as they teach. While the slides do have some images we worked to make sure that the material was accessible and not too busy for students to easily follow along. We hope you will add additional information as you tailor the slides to your own teaching preferences.

    Test Banks

    A set of test questions is included for each chapter. Each chapter includes 20 multiple-choice (including true/false) questions that ask students directly about key concepts and definitions found in the textbook. The correct answer is marked with an asterisk for easy upload via Respondus. In addition to the multiple-choice questions, each chapter has a number of written questions that require both short answers and longer essay-style responses.
