Our gestures, facial expressions, posture, tone of voice, and even the space we keep between ourselves and others all send messages. Sometimes these signals support what we are saying, and other times they can contradict our words.
Nonverbal cues often happen without us even thinking about them, but they still shape how others interpret our messages. A smile can build trust, while crossed arms might suggest distance or discomfort. Because nonverbal communication is often subtle, it requires paying close attention, both to the signals we give off and to those we receive. Understanding this “silent language” helps us deepen connections and avoid misunderstandings in our relationships.
Verbal and nonverbal communication rarely stand alone. Most of the time, they work together to create meaning. The words we choose are important, but the way we deliver them through tone, gestures, or expressions can completely change how they are understood. Think about the difference between saying “I’m fine” with a calm smile compared to saying it with a sharp tone and rolled eyes. The same words carry very different messages. By looking at verbal and nonverbal communication side by side, we can see how they overlap, influence each other, and shape the way people connect.
