You should now have a foundation for the various views we will consider throughout this course as we progress through the lifespan. As each life stage depends on what came before and impacts what happens after, it is important to keep in mind that you should be able to see the connections between the stages. With that in mind, we offer the table below that demonstrates how the various stage theories relate to one another. Depending on what age we are considering, you'll find that certain theories are more relevant at certain ages. In the early years, for example, where thinking is just developing, Piaget will take center stage. In later years, Erikson and other theories not yet presented will be more important. But before we dive into the 1st stage of life, we must first explore how we know what we know - the methods used to inform our understanding of the lifespan.

Ages, Periods of Development, and Stage Theories (All ages are approximated)
Age Period Erikson's Psychosocial Task Freud's Psychosexual Stage Piaget's Cognitive Stage
0–1 Infancy Trust vs. Mistrust Oral Sensorimotor
    1–3 Infancy/Toddlerhood Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt Anal Sensorimotor (0-2)
    Preoperational (2-7)
3–6 Early Childhood Initiative vs. Guilt Phallic Preoperational
7–11 Middle Childhood Industry vs. Inferiority Latency Concrete Operational
12–18 Adolescence Identity vs. Role Confusion Genital Formal Operational
19–30s Emerging/Early Adulthood Intimacy vs. Isolation
40–64 Middle Adulthood Generativity vs. Stagnation
65– Late Adulthood Integrity vs. Despair
