    Case Study: Overwhelmed

    Star is a student in their second semester. They did well in their first semester, and they are looking forward to another positive semester. Star works about 15 hours per week on campus in the Financial Aid Office, and they are taking four classes (12 credits) this semester. Star lives at home with their parents and Star’s two-year-old daughter. About halfway through this second semester, Star realizes things aren’t going as well as last semester, however, and they are starting to feel overwhelmed. Star’s daughter recently was sick, and Star has been asked to do more to contribute to the household plus three classes seem to be much more difficult than expected. Star’s wondering if they are over their head and is thinking about dropping out of school.

    Star knows that college is important to be able to provide a good life for their daughter including moving into an apartment. Star also wants to contribute to their household because Star is grateful for their parents’ help with childcare and support of Star going to college. Finally, Star’s whole life is their daughter, and Star would do anything for her.
