No book is the result of a single person’s efforts, and that is true of this book, too.

First, I have to thank my wife and daughters, who have emotionally supported me as I have written this book.

Second, my sincere thanks to Annette Savoy, my course coordinator at Prince George’s Community College, who suggested I undertake this, and to my department chair, Ennis Allen, who had the confidence in me to approve the effort and who, along with Professor Savoy, served as a superb developmental editor. Thanks also go to Deborah Bowles, interim director of PGCC’s Teaching Learning Center within the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and finally to Gaston Ngando, who did the actual work of converting the text to LibreText format.

Finally, thanks must go to the hundreds of students I have taught at Prince George’s Community College. Their participation in my classes shaped how I developed this textbook. I had them in mind as I wrote each and every sentence.
