Joel Whitaker has been writing news stories since the seventh grade when he founded his middle school newspaper. He went on to be a reporter and editor at the world’s oldest high school daily, the Shortridge Daily Echo; the Indiana (University) Daily Student, where he was a reporter, city editor and editor-in-chief, and, professionally, he has been a reporter and editor at the St. Petersburg Times, Wall Street Journal and Philadelphia Bulletin. He publishes high-priced subscription newsletters for senior executives and has judged national journalism contests, during which he has evaluated more than 1,000 entries.
Whitaker joined the Prince George’s Community College faculty in October 2014 stepping in during the middle of a semester to replace another adjunct who quit with no notice to take a GS-13 job at the Pentagon. He teaches Fundamentals of Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Public Relations Techniques and Newswriting for Public Relations. He has spoken at the national convention of the National Communications Association.
Whitaker earned his bachelor's degree in business journalism from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, his master’s in journalism from the Indiana University Graduate School, and his J.D. degree from Temple University School of Law. He recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Communication Studies from Indiana University.
