    Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students will be able to:

    • SLO 11.1: Differentiate guidance from discipline and explain how each can teach responsibility, self-control, and appropriate social behavior without relying on punishment.
    • SLO 11.2: Discuss the Plan, Practice, Promote framework and other preventive strategies to create supportive environments, teach classroom expectations, and reduce challenging behavior.
    • SLO 11.3: Identify developmentally appropriate guidance strategies, including modeling, coaching, redirection, choices, encouragement, reinforcement, and natural or logical consequences.
    • SLO 11.4: Identify objective documentation and the ABC Observation Method to identify behavioral patterns and contribute to collaborative, individualized Behavior Support Plans.

Chapter 11 Short Overview Scissors with solid fill

This chapter presents guidance as an intentional teaching process that helps children develop self-control, responsibility, empathy, communication, and social competence. It examines proactive practices such as Plan, Practice, Promote, supportive environments, positive relationships, classroom expectations, smooth transitions, and developmentally appropriate guidance strategies. The chapter also explains how objective observation, the ABC Observation Method, family collaboration, and individualized Behavior Support Plans can address persistent challenging behavior.
