The book helps students develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities to make a difference in their communities. The three themes run throughout the book are: Leadership Development, Organizing Skills Development, and Social Movement History.
The book may be used as the curriculum and assignments for a full course. Or faculty may choose to take modules and use them in their own class. Because the materials are all OER, faculty can take and modify any of the materials in ways that serve their needs.
This Introduction to Community Organizing textbook grew out of work that began in 2011 when De Anza College became involved with what has become Community Learning Partnership (CLP). CLP came together to help people from marginalized communities move up career ladders within non-profits, which often require formal college credentialing. CLP set out to leverage the resources of community colleges to offer community organizer training with credentialing, and also to develop community organizing as an academic discipline.
One of the first steps CLP took to develop this curriculum was to convene a national meeting of practitioners of community organizing and community college educators. That meeting then identified the core knowledge, skills, and abilities that should be part of our curriculum. Together, we developed a core curriculum, which has evolved over time.
De Anza College’s Certificate in Leadership and Social Change prepares students to make a difference in their communities and to be ready for jobs doing that work. The certificate involves three general education courses and 6 units of internship. Introduction to Community Organizing, for which this book is for, is one of those three courses.
The curriculum shared here is based on the collective wisdom of CLP as well as Cynthia's many years teaching and modifying the class. There are three themes that run throughout this class: leadership development, organizing skills development, and social movement history.
