- Censorship: The suppression, restriction, or removal of speech, expression, or information by a government, organization, or authority.
- Civil Discourse: Respectful and constructive communication about controversial issues, even when people disagree.
- Credo for Ethical Communication: A set of principles created by the National Communication Association that promotes honesty, respect, fairness, and responsibility in human communication.
- Defamation: A false statement presented as fact that harms a person's reputation. Defamation is not protected by the First Amendment.
- Disinformation: False or misleading information that is intentionally created or shared to deceive others.
- Ethical Communication: Communication that demonstrates honesty, fairness, respect, responsibility, and concern for the well-being of others.
- Ethical Listening: Listening thoughtfully, fairly, and respectfully while considering a speaker’s ideas before judging or responding.
- Ethics: The study and practice of determining what is right, fair, and responsible in human behavior and communication.
- Fairness: Treating people and ideas with impartiality, respect, and consideration, even when disagreements exist.
- First Amendment: Part of the U.S. Constitution that protects freedoms related to speech, press, religion, assembly, and petition, including the right to express opinions without government punishment.
- Free Speech: The right to express ideas, opinions, and beliefs without government censorship or punishment, subject to certain legal limitations.
- Hate Speech: Communication that attacks, demeans, or discriminates against individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
- Incitement: Speech that encourages or calls for immediate unlawful action; this type of expression is not protected by the First Amendment.
- Manipulation: The use of deceptive, misleading, or unfair communication tactics to influence others for personal gain.
- Misinformation: False, misleading, or inaccurate information that is spread without fully verifying its accuracy or truthfulness.
- Plagiarism: Using someone else's words, ideas, or work without giving proper credit and presenting it as your own.
- Protected Speech: Forms of expression that are safeguarded by the First Amendment, even if the ideas expressed are unpopular, controversial, or offensive.
- Respectful Communication: Communication that recognizes the dignity, value, and perspectives of others, even during disagreement.
- Responsibility: The obligation to consider the potential effects and consequences of one’s communication choices.
- Stereotypes: Oversimplified, generalized, and often harmful beliefs about a group of people that can reinforce prejudice or discrimination.
- Transparency: Being open and honest about sources, intentions, affiliations, and potential biases in communication.
- True Threat: A serious statement expressing an intent to commit violence or harm against a person or group. True threats are not protected by the First Amendment.
- Truthfulness: The practice of communicating honestly and accurately without deception, exaggeration, or distortion.
- Unprotected Speech: Categories of speech that receive limited or no First Amendment protection, including incitement, true threats, defamation, and certain forms of obscenity.
