For observers of contemporary media, it is clear that we live in interesting if challenging times. To produce, consumer, or navigate mass media processes and forms requires the ability to think and act across local, national, and global political and cultural contexts. It also requires an understanding of how media is shaped by economic variables, including the availability of capital, the whims of financiers, and the generosity (or lack thereof) of national and regional governments. This book is intended to provide the student of global or cross-border communication with new insights into these processes - whether the mass mediation taking place is of old-school cinema, digital advocacy, videogaming, or the traditional news media. Underpinning all facets of media is their role in society, as conduits of information and persuasion, but also their longstanding place as economic generators and sites of discursive politics. Furthermore, the global mass media is a creator of, but also the outgrowth of, global culture in its many forms. Thus, the evolution of media forms like film and television give us insight not only into systems of political economy, national diplomacy, and local culture, but also long-term macro-social trends that are bound to recalibrate the media forms as we know them today.
