Las habilidades perceptivas de los bebés están en funcionamiento durante cada momento de vigilia. Por ejemplo, estas habilidades pueden observarse cuando un bebé mira a los ojos de su cuidador o distingue entre personas conocidas y desconocidas. Los bebés utilizan la percepción para distinguir las características del entorno, como la altura, la profundidad y el color. “Hoy en día se reconoce que el bebé humano es 'perceptivamente competente'; determinar cómo funcionan los sentidos en la infancia ayuda a especificar el mundo perceptivo de los bebés” (Bornstein 2005, p. 284). Los bebés exploran los objetos de forma diferente según sus características, como el peso, la textura, el sonido o la rigidez (Palmer, 1989). Es posible que los padres y los profesionales hayan observado que los niños pequeños exploran una pendiente, como un tobogán, tocándola con las manos o los pies antes de decidir si se deslizan por ella. Las investigaciones de Adolph, Eppler y Gibson (1993) sugieren que el aprendizaje desempeña un papel en la toma de decisiones de los niños pequeños en situaciones de riesgo físico, como la navegación por pendientes, y que el comportamiento exploratorio puede ser un medio para este aprendizaje. La percepción también está muy relacionada con el ámbito socioemocional, como cuando los niños pequeños perciben las diferencias entre diversas expresiones faciales y llegan a comprender lo que pueden significar.[1]
