Mientras que antes se pensaba que la experiencia que tiene un niño pequeño cuando se relaciona con el mundo es una “confusión floreciente y zumbante” (James, 1890), en las investigaciones se ha revelado que los niños, utilizando la cognición, le dan sentido al mundo que los rodea de formas complejas. Mientras que algunos procesos cognitivos parecen ser innatos, otros se desarrollan a lo largo de los tres primeros años de vida. Lo que está claro es que, a través de las experiencias cotidianas con cuidadores que los apoyan, los bebés y los niños pequeños dan sentido a su mundo y desarrollan habilidades cognitivas importantes que seguirán desarrollando más adelante en la infancia.
