¿Qué es la observación? Un diccionario en línea (Dictionary.com, 2019) ofrece las siguientes definiciones para la palabra “observación” (sustantivo):
- Acto o instancia de notar o percibir.
- Acto o instancia de mirar atentamente o vigilar.
- Facultad o hábito de observar o notar.
- La información o el registro asegurado por ese acto.
La observación informa sobre las prácticas de atención y de enseñanza, las experiencias de aprendizaje, los entornos, las rutinas y los horarios.[1]
Sin embargo, observar lo que hacen los niños es mucho más que mirar. Observar implica concentración y propósito. Stetson, Jablon & Dombro (2009) definieron la observación como “observar y escuchar para aprender sobre cada niño” (Stetson et al., 2009). Las personas encargadas del cuidado observan y escuchan a los niños y a las familias para conocer el desarrollo de cada niño y averiguar cómo está aprendiendo cada uno. Muchos describen la observación como el hecho de prestar mucha atención a los comportamientos, las interacciones, las actividades y los intereses del niño, y de darse cuenta de todos los aspectos de su desarrollo (National Infant & Toddler Child Care Initiative, 2010). Ambas definiciones destacan la importancia de observar para aprender.
Nos demos cuenta o no, observamos constantemente cuando trabajamos con bebés, niños pequeños y familias. Para muchos cuidadores, la observación se convierte en una segunda naturaleza, en parte de lo que hacemos. Asimilamos información con regularidad; y, de forma consciente o no, estas observaciones contribuyen a nuestro trabajo y a nuestras interacciones.[2]
