One example of this application is dementia from Alzheimer's disease. As discussed during section 4.5.3 "Elderly", 6.7 million older adults have Alzheimer's, and this number is expected to double by 2060 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). Research indicates that stimulating mental activity, staying physically active, and reducing cardiovascular risk offer moderate benefits for Alzheimer's disease (Riegelman & Kirkwood, 2025 p147).
Public health research is essential for preventing and managing chronic diseases by providing evidence-based strategies to address risk factors, implement effective interventions, and inform health policy. By collecting and analyzing data, researchers help public health professionals understand the causes, distribution, and burden of chronic illnesses (Dauchess, 2025).
