Introduction and Professor Chin's Take
The story of Latinx communities in the United States is deeply connected to the nation's history of expansion, immigration, labor, citizenship, and democracy. This chapter explores how Latinx experiences have been shaped by historical events such as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, changing immigration policies, civil rights movements, and ongoing debates over representation and belonging. Rather than viewing Latinx communities as a single, uniform group, we will examine the rich diversity of identities, cultures, and experiences that exist across different national origins, generations, races, and immigration backgrounds.
From a political science perspective, this chapter demonstrates how public policy, government institutions, and social movements influence people's everyday lives. Laws related to immigration, education, voting, labor, and civil rights have opened opportunities for some while creating barriers for others. At the same time, Latinx communities have continually organized to advocate for greater equality, political participation, and social change through activism, community organizing, and civic engagement.
