Hopefully after exploring this text, you have a thorough understanding of what self-care is and why it is vitally important for not only your clients, but also for yourself as a clinician. Understanding the different areas of self-care should help you in formulating a treatment plan and increase your comfort level in speaking to clients about the benefits of self-care in their overall wellness.
As you have seen, there is a plethora of research supporting the addition of a self-care routine to each person’s life. Self-care affects every area of an individual’s life and gaining knowledge about the meaning, concepts, and interventions can be life-changing for you and your clients.
The focus on how self-care is related to overall wellness is also important as we, as counselors, view clients from a wellness perspective. This is an important part of our identity as counselors and can serve as a powerful tool in helping our clients achieve their goals.
Hopefully this text will encourage you to continue educating yourself about the various areas of self-care. Doing so will help you become an efficient self-care advocate in both your and your client’s lives.
