Note to Instructor: Having students take responsibility for teaching some of the class material pushes them to work together as a team, has them practice presentation skills, and keeps the material relevant to student interests. This assignment can take place toward the middle of the term.
Each team will be responsible for facilitating some part of a class session. You will work as a team to present on a person, organization, or movement that is a good example of the Leadership Style we are studying, OR you will do a presentation on some artistic/cultural work for social change.
- You will have between 10 and 30 minutes.
- Make sure everyone speaks at least once
- You can decide how you want to use your part of the class time: pose a discussion
- questions, lecture, show a video, and do an interactive exercise.
- Your team will share your plan with your instructor at least 2 days before the class session. Tell your instructor who the point person is who is responsible for communicating with them about your progress. If this doesn’t happen, your team will all lose 25 points for this project.
Option 1
Help the class learn more about the leadership style we are studying by sharing a person or movement that is a good example of that leadership style. You can pick a person or a movement to introduce the class to who is not already being discussed in class. OR you can pick a person or organization that is already in the class material. If you do you must not repeat what everyone else is learning. You can go more deeply into the subject.
Option 2
OR you can do research on art, music, or culture that was part of one of the movements discussed in the section of the class you are presenting in and teach the class about how the movement or organization used art and culture as part of their work.

- Beautiful Trouble is a toolbox that provides cutting-edge resources from practitioners all over the world that address social movements and grassroots organizing.
- Community Toolbox is a toolbox that focuses on learning the skills to take action in community organizing efforts.
- Center for Applied Non-violent Strategy is a hub where trainers all over the world can bring together their expertise and share it with others via trainings and resources.
- Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee Archives is a national civil rights organization led by young people. They work with community leaders to build local grassroots organizations and provide information and tools.
