Note to Instructor: This is a set of small assignments for integrating community engagement into your class. It is built on the basis of 200 points out of 1000.
This project is an opportunity to engage with a community organization involved in social change work. It aims to give you hands-on experience in contributing to your community and to deepen your understanding of the material we are studying by putting it into practice and testing it against the real world. Note: Any elements of this project that are late will be marked down by one-half. This requires a total of 12 hours for a quarter-long class (12 weeks).
Engagement Work Reflection Assignment #1 (25 points)
Turn in a 1–2-page response to the following prompts:
- What is the purpose of the organization and how does it function or how is it structured (5 points)
- What you plan to do with the organization (5 points)
- What do you hope to learn from the experience and how it might be related to our class material? (5 points)
- What is the name of the organization you will be working with, the name of your supervisor, and their email address? (10 points)
Engagement Work Reflection Assignment #2 (15 points)
Turn in a 1-2 page response to the following prompts:
- What has been interesting to you about your engagement project? (5 points)
- What problem is the organization trying to address? What is one issue that they take up? (5 points)
- How well does the work address the 6 aspects of a good issue outlined in the “Problems and Issues” reading? Really analyze these, it doesn’t have to be good on all of them. (5 points)
Presentation of Engagement Work Reflection (10 points)
Students share about their engagement to work to their peers. This can be to the class as a whole or in their squads. 3-5 minutes each.
Final Reflection (50 points)
- Make some point about your experience using a concept or idea from class as support (10 points).
- How did it feel doing this work and how did it stretch you as a person? (10 points)
- What actions will you do differently based on this work and why? (10 points).
- What do you think about your organization’s ability to make a significant difference? What did you value the most or have the most criticism of in terms of ability to make a significant difference? (10 points).
- What is your biggest takeaway from this class? (10 points).
Hours/12 hours minimum (100 points)
You must complete 12 hours of engagement work to earn the full 100 points.
- Between 8-11 hours=80 points.
- Below 5-7 hours= 50 points.
- Below 5 hours No Credit
