- Activity Theory: The theory that successful aging occurs when older adults stay active and maintain social interactions.
- Ageism: Prejudice or discrimination against individuals based on their age.
- Alzheimer’s Disease: A progressive, degenerative brain disorder that results in memory loss, confusion, and eventual loss of basic bodily functions.
- Bereavement: The state of having experienced the death of a loved one.
- Cellular Clock Theory: The theory that aging occurs because cells have a limited number of divisions before they die.
- Continuity Theory: The theory that older adults will maintain the same activities, behaviors, and relationships as they did in earlier life stages.
- Ego Integrity versus Despair: Erikson’s eighth stage of psychosocial development, where older adults reflect on their lives and either feel a sense of satisfaction or regret.
- Explicit Memory: Memory of facts and experiences that individuals consciously know and can state.

- Selective Optimization with Compensation: A strategy for successful aging where individuals focus on their most important goals and compensate for declines in other areas.
- Socioemotional Selectivity Theory: The theory that older adults become more selective about their social networks, prioritizing emotionally meaningful relationships.
- Wisdom: Expert knowledge about the practical aspects of life that permits excellent judgment about important matters.
