    Community as a Socialization Agent

As we have seen, a child is socialized within the context of a family and culture. A child is also socialized within a community. The community a child grows up in can influence a child in their access to resources, their access to education, their access to health and wellness and their access to kinship. It is an identifier. Where are you from? One of the questions we might get asked if someone is getting to know us. The answer can give a lot of context to who we are as individuals. Did we grow up in the city or in a farming town? Was it a on the West Coast of the United States or in the bustling city of Hong Kong? The community a child grows up in contributes to the socialization of a child and has profound impacts on their development as we will see in this chapter.
