Introduction to Global Studies is the first open educational resource (OER) on the topic of Global Studies, and the first OER textbook in Global Studies funded by ASCCC OERI, and what we hope will become the first of two OER textbooks for the discipline. This textbook aligns with the C-ID Course Descriptor for Introduction to Global Studies in content and objectives.

With chapter contributions from Dr. Charlotte Lee at Berkeley City College, Dr. Austen Thelen at Imperial Valley College, Lauren Blanchard at Monterey Peninsula College, Dr. Steven Cauchon at Imperial Valley College, Dr. Masahiro Omae at San Diego City College, Dr. Elizabeth Walker at College of the Desert, and myself, the purpose of this open education resource is to provide students interested in or majoring in Global Studies.

It is organized thematically, with ten content chapters accompanied by an At Home and Abroad section, which contextualizes the concepts presented in each chapter, and bookended with an introduction and a final chapter in which we explore the future of globalization. As Global Studies is inherently multidisciplinary, we understand that definitions might vary from one field to the next. Thus, we have worked hard to make sure that the key terms are similar throughout the text. We are thankful to Dr. Travis Ritt from Palomar College for his editing of this OER textbook. He helped to provide a unifying voice across the chapters.

With the rising costs of education and textbooks, community college students may be deterred from exploring Global Studies courses. After many years of teaching at a community college, my colleagues and I realize the need existed for a zero-cost textbook. I chose to pursue this project as I felt that an OER textbook in Global Studies would otherwise never have been written. This is a grassroots textbook, written with current and future community college students in mind. I believe that this is where the next world leader needs to come from.

This open education resource is free to students and faculty and available under the Creative Commons - Attribution - Noncommercial (CC BY-NC) license. We hope that it will encourage them to further their studies in both Global Studies and its related fields.
