El desarrollo de la capacidad de los niños para controlar los impulsos los ayuda a adaptarse a las situaciones sociales y a seguir las normas. A medida que los bebés crecen, son cada vez más capaces de ejercer un control voluntario sobre su comportamiento, como, por ejemplo, esperar a que se cumplan sus necesidades, inhibir los comportamientos posiblemente perjudiciales y actuar de acuerdo con las expectativas sociales, incluidas las normas de seguridad. Los entornos de cuidado en grupo ofrecen muchas oportunidades para que los niños practiquen sus habilidades de control de impulsos. Las interacciones con los compañeros suelen ofrecer oportunidades naturales para que los niños pequeños practiquen el control de los impulsos mientras aprenden a jugar de forma cooperativa y a compartir. La comprensión o el desconocimiento de los niños pequeños de las peticiones que se les hacen contribuye a sus respuestas (Kaler & Kopp, 1990). [1]
