Uno de los desafíos más importantes para los cuidadores de bebés y niños pequeños es observar y registrar sus observaciones mientras los cuidan. Aprender a trabajar en este proceso requiere tiempo y un sistema de apoyo sólido. Los cuidadores pueden elaborar planes juntos para observar y registrar el comportamiento dentro del contexto de las rutinas y de las actividades diarias. Algunos cuidadores se turnan y otros colocan sistemas, como cámaras y tarjetas con notas alrededor de las zonas interiores y exteriores para poder tomar notas o fotos rápidas en el momento. Hay muchas maneras de participar y observar al mismo tiempo. Los bebés y los niños pequeños se acostumbran a que sus cuidadores tomen notas y fotos, y el proceso de observar y registrar el comportamiento se convierte en una parte habitual de las rutinas diarias. El proceso de documentación de los cuidadores que se ocupan a diario de bebés o niños pequeños es el más útil, porque el cuidador comprende el contexto completo, desde cómo durmió la noche anterior hasta sus intereses actuales. Los cuidadores que observan con regularidad tienen más posibilidades de proporcionar cuidados y educación que se relacionen con cada bebé y niño pequeño.[1]
