    Learning Objectives
    1. Describe the purpose and process of formal developmental evaluations and how they differ from monitoring and screening.

    Evaluations are conducted by professionals in the field(s) where the developmental delay(s) and/or disability(ies) is/are suspected. This could include doctors, pediatricians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, behavior analysts, and more. Evaluations are more formal than monitoring and routine screenings. Developmental evaluations, which can include the use of screening tools by professionals, take a closer look at how a child is developing. Often, professionals will use multiple tools as part of the evaluation process to provide a well-rounded picture of the child's current capabilities and validate scores across multiple sources.

    Depending upon the nature of the red flag, a battery of tools can be used to evaluate a child’s development. Here are some guidelines:

    • A more comprehensive assessment and formal evaluation must be conducted by a professional in order to confirm or disconfirm any red flags that were raised during the initial monitoring or screening process
    • Families must be treated with dignity, sensitivity, and compassion while their child is going through the screening process
    • Use a screening tool from a reputable publishing company
