If you like sports, a sports information director job might be just what you’re looking for. All colleges and universities that have intercollegiate athletics team have them and of course professional teams have public relations departments.
The sports information director performs a multitude of tasks, all oriented to getting the word out about the team. The sports information director, or a member of his staff, attends and summarizes athletic events, arranges interviews and provide information to the media.
He also is responsible for consistently recording accurate statistics from various events. At a baseball game, for instance, he would record each hitter’s batting average and each pitcher’s earned run average. In football, he would record information such as a quarterback’s passing average and touchdown completions.
Another responsibility is arranging interviews between media and coaches, and sometimes players. He also may be responsible for arranging any special event – such as autograph signings, hall of fame inductions. These are important because in publicizing the athletic department’s accomplishments, the SID helps make it better known.
