This course has focused on basic training in journalistic writing and how that is applied both to regular journalism – newspapers and online news sites – but also to public relations.
The question you, the reader, should have is: What are the employment opportunities where I can apply my skills? As a general rule, someone starting in a field is well advised to work for an organization for a few years before going out on one’s own.
You’re going to answer that question by researching job opportunities for writers and editors in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C.. Metro Areas.
PRACTICAL EXERCISE
You’re a reporter for The Washington Post which is planning to publish a special careers edition. Among the stories for Writer/Editor will be a piece explaining what writer/editors do, how much they are paid, and the minimum qualifications for a job.
Your assignment is to write the story. Your editor wants you to describe what its like working at least three different companies plus one federal agency. Your editor also says it would be “nice” if you could discover how many writer/editor jobs are open in the DC and Baltimore regions. He then says he couldn’t find the answer, but hopes you can.
No more than 800 words. AP Style. You do not have to interview anyone for this assignment.
