- This chapter introduces Chicanx and Latinx studies, providing foundational information and context for learners. It emphasizes new directions in the field, including transnational, intersectional, and relational approaches. The chapter discusses the historical roots of the discipline within ethnic studies movements and its connections to interdisciplinary fields.
- 2: Identities
- This chapter explores current Latinx demographics and the factors that impact them, including various historical, political, and social processes. These processes have shaped the racialization of Chicanxs and Latinxs impacting their experiences, life outcomes, and self-identification. This chapter also introduces Chicanx/Latinx studies identity concepts, theories, and frameworks, which provide a foundation for understanding the Chicanx/Latinx communities who are the subject of this textbook.
- 3: History and Historiography
- This chapter defines Chicanx/Latinx history and examines the ways the field disrupts dominant conventions in the discipline of history through the usage of anti-imperial, anti-racist, decolonial, and medicinal approaches and methods. The contributions of feminist and queer studies scholars are highlighted, along with other activist scholars, who are working to expand and deepen the field of Chicanx/Latinx history.
- 4: Indigeneities
- This chapter delves into the intricate relationships between Indigeneity, migration, and intra-and-inter-group dynamics within Chicanx and Indigenous Latinx communities. It adopts a transnational framework, moving beyond traditional historical narratives, to highlight the complexities of these dynamics, which are shaped by global political economies, historical legacies of colonialism and genocide, land displacement, immigration policies, and militarized enforcement strategies.
- 5: Feminisms
- This chapter provides a primer on Chicana/Latina feminisms, exploring a variety of political, social, artistic, and scholarly issues, movements, and practices. Chicana/Latina feminists draw inspiration from a long lineage of radical feminist praxis, often building coalitions with other marginalized communities. Some key issues introduced include economic justice, reproductive justice, cultural activism, family dynamics, and activist scholarship.
- 6: Jotería Studies
- This chapter focuses on jotería studies and highlights topics such as jotería education, pedagogy, activism, art, nightlife, spirituality, sex, and others, and how jotería as a community and as an academic field have paved an innovative and transformative path for thinking about the intersections of gender, race, and sexuality in Chicanx and Latinx communities.
- 7: Social Movement Activity
- This chapter explores struggles, resistance, and social justice efforts within Chicanx and Latinx communities. It aims to analyze historical and contemporary movements that have pursued equity, self-determination, liberation, decolonization, sovereignty, and anti-racism. The chapter also introduces theoretical frameworks such as Chicana movidas, Chicanismo, and reform, revolutionary, and reactionary movements to understand the strategies and tactics employed by these communities.
- 8: Education and Activism
- This chapter explores public education in California as a site of struggle, resilience, and transformation for students, caregivers, families, and communities of Latin American heritage. The struggle for education is also a struggle that intersects with the struggle for justice in housing, employment, health, immigrant/human rights, and self-determination. This chapter provides an overview that is a snapshot into the ways Latinx communities have been shaped by and have shaped education.
- 9: Health
- This chapter focuses on the factors, conditions, and cultural contexts that influence the health of Chicanx and Latinx communities. It explores both individual health outcomes and behaviors, as well as the collective realities that contribute to health disparities and inequalities. While factors such as systemic racism, xenophobia, and intersectional oppression pose risks, the chapter also highlights factors that promote health, resilience, and strength within Chicanx and Latinx populations.
- 10: Cultural Productions
- This chapter explores the role of cultural productions in Chicanx and Latinx communities, focusing on identity, community, social movements, and the intersectionality of race, class, gender, sexuality, immigration status, ability, and Indigeneity. It examines concepts such as pop culture analysis, stereotypes, image analysis, and artivism as tools for analyzing media and cultural context.
